A practical guide to the Brampton courthouse

What to know before you go to the A. Grenville and William Davis Courthouse on Hurontario Street in Brampton: opening hours, travel, screening, courtrooms and how a first criminal appearance works.

Checked October 27, 2026. General information, not legal advice. Arrangements change; confirm with the court before you go.

Location and opening hours

Criminal court in Brampton sits at 7755 Hurontario Street, Brampton, Ontario L6W 4T1, in the A. Grenville and William Davis Courthouse. Few courthouses in Ontario see more traffic.

Two trial courts share the building. Most criminal matters, from first appearances and bail hearings to youth cases, go to the Ontario Court of Justice. Jury trials and the most serious charges go to the Superior Court of Justice. Family, civil and Divisional Court cases are heard here too. Small Claims Court is separate, next door at 7765 Hurontario Street.

An expansion finished in 2024 added six floors and 18 hearing rooms, 13 of which are courtrooms. The province estimated this would lift hearing-room capacity by roughly 35 per cent. With so many rooms in use, look up your courtroom number on your paperwork before you come.

Opening hours

  • Public entrance: opens around 8:00 a.m. on weekdays.
  • Court offices: 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday to Friday.
  • Counter service: 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., then 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday to Friday.

The main criminal courtrooms are scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m.

Travelling to the courthouse

Driving. The Hurontario Street building has its own parking. Most courtrooms begin on weekday mornings, which is when finding a spot and getting inside takes longest, so build in a buffer. Parking arrangements may change; go by the posted signs.

Public transit. Brampton Transit's 502 Züm Main line travels Main Street and Hurontario Street between downtown Brampton, beside Brampton GO Station, and the City Centre Transit Terminal in Mississauga. From either city, it is the most direct way to get here by transit. The Brampton Transit and MiWay trip planners will show you the nearest stop and current times.

Give yourself 30 minutes. Ontario suggests getting to court half an hour ahead of your appearance. At Brampton, the security line often uses up much of that window.

Getting through security

Look for the doors marked for the public, since one entrance is for staff only. Every visitor passes through a security checkpoint at the front entrance. Expect your bags to go through a scanner, and you may be asked to remove your coat and belt. Lines tend to be longest before 9:00 a.m.

  • Do not bring pocket knives, utility knives or anything else that could count as a weapon. Prohibited items can be confiscated, and you can be turned away at the door.
  • Photos and video are not allowed inside the building without a judge's permission.
  • A second bag search may happen at the door of your courtroom.

Which courtroom to go to

Check your summons, appearance notice or release papers. They list the date and time of your appearance and, in most cases, the courtroom, so bring them along. When you reach the courtroom, let the registrar (the clerk seated at the front) know you are there, then wait to be called.

The Ontario Court of Justice posts a list of what each Brampton criminal courtroom handles. Its most recent version shows:

  • Courtroom 104: adult criminal case management where the accused has no lawyer, weekdays starting at 9:00 a.m.
  • Courtroom 307: adult criminal case management where the accused has a lawyer, weekdays starting at 9:00 a.m.
  • Courtroom 108: audio and video remands for people appearing from custody.
  • Courtroom 204: youth matters, youth diversion and federal first appearances.
  • Courtroom 302: the Early Intervention Program, Wednesday afternoons from 2:15 p.m.
  • Courtroom 103: plea court.

These assignments are not fixed. When your paperwork lists another courtroom, go by your paperwork, or ask at the information counter.

Courtroom etiquette

Silence your phone or switch it off, and put it away. Take off hats and sunglasses unless you wear them for a religious or medical reason. Leave food and drinks outside.

Rise when the judge comes in or leaves, and whenever you address the judge. If a hearing is under way when you arrive, you may need to wait at the door for a break.

What happens at a first appearance

The first date on your paperwork is not a trial. A criminal case usually comes back to court several times before it ends. The early dates are for receiving disclosure (the evidence the Crown has), speaking with the Crown and planning what happens next.

No lawyer yet? You still have options:

  • On the day of your first appearance, duty counsel, the Legal Aid lawyers who work at the courthouse, can speak with you. The general number for Legal Aid Ontario is 1-800-668-8258.
  • The Crown Attorney's office can give you information about your case. Before you call, gather your full name, date of birth, the charges, your police occurrence number (printed on your release papers) and your contact information.
  • Nobody at the court, whether a judge, a staff member or Crown counsel, can give you legal advice.

Already have a lawyer? Ask whether you need to be there in person. For many case-management dates, a lawyer can file a designation and appear in your place, which may mean you do not need to go to the courthouse.

Never skip a court date. Not showing up when required can result in a warrant for your arrest and an additional charge. If you cannot attend, contact the court or speak with a lawyer before the date arrives.

Appearing remotely by Zoom

A large share of Brampton's case-management appearances take place remotely. For each courtroom, the Ontario Court of Justice publishes a Zoom meeting ID, passcode and telephone dial-in number, and those details are repeated in the contacts section further down this page. Only use them if the court, your lawyer or your paperwork says you can appear remotely.

A video appearance is still court. Log in from somewhere quiet and private, and follow the court's remote appearance code of conduct.

Asking for an accessibility accommodation

The courthouse accessibility coordinator arranges disability accommodations for court proceedings, such as real-time captioning, a temporary wheelchair or an assistive listening device. Get in touch as early as possible:

Tell the coordinator what accommodation you need, along with the court address, your court file number and the date and time of the hearing. Missing some of those details? Reach out anyway.

Zoom details and contacts

Confirm before you attend. Your release papers and the court’s current directions decide where and how you appear. Never record or share a court proceeding.
