Your guide to the Oshawa (Durham) courthouse

A plain-language overview of the Lieutenant-Colonel Samuel S. Sharpe, DSO, MP Courthouse at 150 Bond Street East, covering hours, parking, security, courtrooms and first appearances.

Checked October 27, 2026. General information, not legal advice. Arrangements change; confirm with the court before you go.

Location and hours

Downtown Oshawa's courthouse sits at 150 Bond Street East, Oshawa, Ontario L1G 0A2. Its official name is the Lieutenant-Colonel Samuel S. Sharpe, DSO, MP Courthouse, and the Ontario Court of Justice refers to it as its Oshawa (Durham) location.

Two trial courts share the building. The Ontario Court of Justice deals with most criminal cases, from first appearances and bail to youth matters. The Superior Court of Justice takes jury trials and the most serious charges. Family, civil, Divisional Court and small claims cases are heard here as well.

Office and counter hours

  • Court offices: Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Counter service: Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Parking and arrival

Where to park. Two City of Oshawa garages serve downtown, both between King Street and Bond Street: Garage 1 on Centre Street and Garage 3 on Mary Street. Each charges $1.75 an hour up to $17.50 for the day and accepts credit cards, tokens and cash. Rates may change, so read the posted signs.

Give yourself 30 extra minutes. Ontario suggests getting to court half an hour before your appearance time, and the security line can use up a good part of that.

Going through security

Screening happens at the front door for every visitor, and your bags may be checked a second time at the courtroom entrance. Lineups are longest before the morning courts begin, so build in extra time.

  • Weapons of any kind stay at home. That includes pocket knives and utility knives. Banned items can be taken from you, and you may be turned away at the door.
  • No photography or recording is allowed anywhere in the building without a judge's permission.

Which courtroom you are in

Bring your release papers, summons or appearance notice. They list your court date and time, and in most cases your courtroom.

The Ontario Court of Justice publishes how criminal matters are split across Oshawa's courtrooms. Its latest schedule shows:

  • Courtroom 108 hears adult criminal case management for people who do not have a lawyer, Monday to Friday, starting at 9:00 a.m.
  • Courtrooms V108 and V102 hear adult criminal case management for people who do have a lawyer, along with in-custody matters, Monday to Friday, starting at 9:00 a.m.
  • Courtroom 101 is youth court, on Tuesdays.
  • Plea court also sits here.

These assignments are not fixed. Where your paperwork lists another courtroom, go by your paperwork, or check with the information counter.

Courtroom etiquette

A few rules apply in every courtroom:

  • When you arrive, let the registrar know you are there. The registrar is the court clerk seated at the front.
  • Silence your phone or switch it off, and keep it put away.
  • Take off hats and sunglasses. Religious and medical exceptions apply.
  • Do not eat or drink.
  • Rise when the judge comes in or leaves, and whenever you address the judge.
  • If the court is already sitting when you get there, you may need to wait at the door until a break.

What happens at a first appearance

Expect your first date to be an early step, not a trial. A criminal case usually comes back to court several times before it ends. Those early appearances are for receiving disclosure (the Crown's evidence), for discussions with the Crown and for planning what comes next.

No lawyer yet? You still have options:

  • Duty counsel are Legal Aid lawyers who work at the courthouse, and you can speak with one on the day of your first appearance. In Oshawa, duty counsel can be reached at 905-728-3801 or [email protected].
  • The Crown Attorney's office can give you information about your case. Before you contact it, gather your full name, date of birth, the charges, the police occurrence number shown on your release papers and your contact details.
  • Nobody on the court side, whether a judge, a member of court staff or Crown counsel, can give you legal advice.

Already have a lawyer? Ask whether you must attend in person. At many case-management dates a lawyer can file a designation and appear on your behalf, which may mean you do not need to go to the courthouse.

Never skip a court date. Missing a required appearance can result in a warrant for your arrest and an additional charge. If something will stop you from attending, contact a lawyer or the court ahead of time.

Appearing on Zoom

Remote appearances are common in Oshawa's case-management courts. For each courtroom, the Ontario Court of Justice posts a Zoom meeting ID, a passcode and phone dial-in numbers, and you will find them in the contacts section further down this page. Join remotely only if your paperwork, your lawyer or the court has said you may.

A video appearance is still court. Find a quiet, private spot and follow the court's code of conduct for remote appearances.

Help with accessibility

Disability accommodations in court can include an assistive listening device, a temporary wheelchair or real-time captioning. Reach the courthouse's accessibility coordinator as soon as you can:

Tell the coordinator the court address, your court file number, the date and time of your proceeding and the accommodation you need. Missing some of those details? Get in touch anyway.

Zoom details and contacts

Confirm before you attend. Your release papers and the court’s current directions decide where and how you appear. Never record or share a court proceeding.

Is there parking near the Oshawa courthouse?

Yes. The City of Oshawa runs downtown garages on Centre Street and Mary Street, between King and Bond streets. Both cost $1.75 an hour, to a daily maximum of $17.50. Posted signs show current rates, which can change.

What are the Oshawa courthouse's hours?

Court offices are open 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday to Friday. The public counter runs on the same weekdays from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. and again from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Your courtroom's start time is on your paperwork.

Can I appear by Zoom for a criminal matter in Oshawa?

Frequently, particularly for case-management dates, but only where your paperwork, your lawyer or the court permits it. This page lists the published Zoom details for each courtroom. When in doubt, go in person or check with a lawyer.

If I have a lawyer, do I still need to attend court?

Sometimes not. A lawyer can often file a designation and appear for you at case-management dates. Other appearances, such as a plea or a trial, usually need you there in person. Check with your lawyer before every date.
